The Suffering Bastard was born in the heat of World War II at the Shepheard’s Hotel in Cairo. Created by local bartender Joe Scialom to revive battle-weary British officers, it was originally a mix of gin, brandy, bitters, and ginger beer—designed specifically as a hangover cure. The drink became so popular that it was reportedly requested by name from the front lines. It later made its way into tiki culture, evolving through various riffs but always keeping its bold, reviving bite. This cocktail isn’t just a cure—it’s a war story in a glass.
